As parents we are our children’s first teacher. They watch everything that we do and often imitate our behavior. So what direction are we sending our children in? What are we teaching our boys and girls that will one day be men and women. What do we want them to take into their future. Are we teaching love, respect, patience, confidence, self-worth, common decency ? Are we motivating, teaching them that the only limitations they have are the ones that they place on themselves? Did we teach them to pray, are we encouraging a relationship with the heavenly Father? Did we teach them that Jesus is Lord and that with Him all things are possible? Are we teaching that trials only come to make us stronger and that God is manifested in our challenges? Or did we just take the easy way out, pass the teachings on to someone else, doesn’t matter who, it could be the streets. Allowing them to be victims of bad environment… Are we teaching hate and revenge? Are we teaching disrespect, self and community destruction? You child saw you throw that can or paper on the ground and not pick it up. Yes, the teachings start with even the smallest of things. Your child heard you as you spoke ill of another person. They see what you watch on TV. Did we correct and redirect when we saw our child do something wrong? Did you tell your child that you love him/her today? Did you spend some personal time with your child today? When was the last time /or have you ever prayed with your child or taken your child to church? Are you teaching your child values and letting them know that they can always come to you for support. Know where your children are, who their friends are, give a curfew, set some rules, don’t be afraid to give your child proper home-training, they’ll love, respect and appreciate you for it later. Children are a blessing from God, and it’s up to us to shape and mold the blessing that God has given us.
New King James Version (NKJV)
6 Train up a child in the way he should go,
And when he is old he will not depart from it.
